87mph backwards into armco
Someone just sent me a picture showing me doing what I love doing best – 87 mph backwards across a gravel trap! It was from the MSV TDT race this weekend at Mallory Park. I fell off following an overtaking manoeuvre on a back marker that went a little wrong coming out of Gerrards. Luckily very little damage done to the car and I only managed to lose 12 seconds in the incident. The in car video tells the full story.
What is the best designed item you own?
I love great design, things that from the second you see them, touch them or pick them up you know how they work and they have a rightness of fit and purpose. We are surrounded by great design from simple every day objects such as my favourite kitchen tongs, more complex electronic items, automobiles and buildings, but what is that one thing that stands out above everything else for you?
The reason I ask is I have worked out mine, it is not particually high tech, but it does employ design based in technology, material science and not that of electronics of information technology. It is a BBQ, a very specific BBQ.
Recycled domian and company names
I have just been having a look at what happened to some of the companies and projects I have been involved in over the last couple of decades. The internet is a very curious place. A lot of stuff from ten years or so ago is simply not there any more and with the re-cycling of domain names it is probably happening much quicker.
In the late 90′s we created a subsidiary within the RCMS Group called blue2blue. This was a “new media”/eCommerce venture. As this was new and fresh I went to some brand managers to help us find both the name and define the brand (somewhere I still have one of the mood boards). Of course creating a business name that you could guarantee was available as a domain name was easy back then. In fact I do not think we checked that the domain name was available until after we had agreed on the logo! Today blue2blue.com advertises the wares of a property management business of the same name, the assets of the original company having been like so many things that came and went in the dot com era sold on years ago. As a result search becomes confused and the history fades away.
Another is jet-a.com – Now a private air charter business. However back in 1999/2000 the Jet-A consortium was a huge project to bring together the major aviation fuel suppliers, airfield operators and airlines to create an e-commerce hub for aircraft refuelling. A massive project that was brought to a swift end by the events of 9/11.
It Lives ….
After the financial failure of the web hosting company I was previously using which resulted in SeanD.info disappearing from the Internet. I have moved the domain to Joyent. Unfortunately the backup of the old site has been impossible to restore, although I may cut and paste old articles as and when I have time. So for now we have a clean fresh site.
